Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
This week in school we had 2 beautiful Advent assemblies led by Mr McKenna's Year 3 class and Miss Walsh's Year 4 class.
Both assemblies focused us all on how we can use this time in the build up to Christmas to prepare for the special day. It reminded us of the importance of love, joy, hope and peace during this festive season.
In addition to this Mr Traynor delivered some important messages and there was lots to celebrate with the presentation of our monthly awardssome fabulous achievements in our Accelerated Reading Programme. Well done to everyone involved!
Professor Eileen Murphy, mother of Gabriel in Year 5 came to school to deliver an educational workshop on Ancient Egpt. Professor Murphy is a specialist in Egyptology and all of the children in Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed the workshop which she delivered. Indeed they are now much more knowledgeable about life in Ancient Egyptian times. Thank you Professor Murphy for taking the time out of your busy schedule to come tody!
This Sunday 27th November marked the First Sunday of Advent. On Tuesday 29th November, Canon Colm called to school to bless our Advent Wreath. During our Prayer Service we had a number of special readings from Mr Traynor, Mr McCarthy and members of the Year 7 Faith Group. To conclude the service our Year 7 pupils sand a beautiful rendition of Silent Night.
After the Service the Advent Wreath was moved to the foyer of our school. Here the Faith Group met to discuss the proper upkeep of our wreath and to share responsibilities for delivering our whole school Advent messages to each class during the month of December.
Members of the Eco team attended an awards ceremony at Greenmount College for our scarecrow entries to the Garden Show in Antrim earlier this year. The deputy Lord Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey was in attendance as well as tutors from Greenmount college.
After some refreshments each school had their presentation, which was a poinsettia plant (that had been grown in Greenmount), an apple tree and a goodie bag for each of the pupils. We then had the chance to see some of the greenhouses that the students use and got an opportunity to choose some pansies and plant them in our own containers. It was a very enjoyable morning and a great experience for the children involved.
Congratulation to the Girls Gaelic 5-a-side team who travelled to Antrim Forum today to represent our school at this South West Antrim footbal tournament. There was great skill and team work displayed and lots of fun keeping fit and healthy by the girls in attendance. Well done girls - you were great role models for our school.
Many thanks to all the members of our school choir who came along to the switchon of the lights in Crumlin on Thursday evening. There was a great atmosphere made even better by the sound of the beautiful singing from our boys and girls.
Well done and thanks to Mrs McDonnell and Mrs Matthews for all their hard work with the school choir, especially now as we approach the Christmas season.
Today our Eco Committe held Day 1 of their first ever Christmas Jumper Swap in school. There were lots of jumpers to choose from and indeed a bargain to be hard. Congratulations Eco Committe on some great Christmas recycling and helping others save a few pounds and we fast approach the festive season!
Our own school orchestra had a wonderful trip to the Waterfront Hall in Belfast today to watch the Ulster Orchestra in concert. They had a great experience and it has certainly inspired them to keep working on their own instruments ... perhaps some day they will be a member of the Ulster Orchestra themselves ..... watch this space!
Many thanks to Mr John Duff from Coco Ice Creams who must have broken a record as he delivered an Ice Cream treat to all the boys and girls (and staff) in our school. It was all in a good cause with a donation being made to Children in Need from St Joseph's!
We have just finished the first week of our 'Only Smarties Have The Answer' Friends of St Joseph's Fundraiser. To date we have had 38 tubes of Smarties returned and a total of £390 collected.
Please keep collecting those 20p coins and returning those Smartie tubes. Let's hit our target of £2,000.
And rememenber, it's not only Smarties who have the answer ....
ST JOSEPH'S HAS THE ANSWER TOO!
