Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Year 6 classes each welcomed a visit from Christian Aid worker David this week. David held mini- workshops in each of the classes exploring what his organisation did, how they help people and children from developing countries and how they make links with the Fairtrade organisation. David talked to the children about how Christian Aid raises money and how they support people who are living in poverty. Christian Aid help by providing money for clean water, providing funds so people have enough food and ensuring that people have safe places to live. As part of our ‘Fair Active’ Award, children explored and played ‘The Coffee Chain’ game! Children had to put their numeracy skills to the test by trying to calculate how much money is generated and received by producing a simple jar of coffee from South America!
Well done to our Year 6 children and a very big thank you to David from Christian Aid for making the Fairtrade workshops such fun!
Congratulations and many thanks to all who supported our ‘Back to Blackboard Day’. This is one in a series of events to mark the centenary of our school. The period costumes were amazing, thank you to all the parents for their support with getting the children ready. The staff got into the spirit too and transformed their classrooms with no computers, blackboards, finger nail checks, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic drills.
Many thanks to Tesco for their refreshments for the children and Maxwell Freight for the lorry for our parade. Thank you to Paul McErlane for the wonderful photographs he took. Thank you to all the parents, local businesses and the wider community who lined the route as the Maxwell Titanic lorry surrounded by the entire school in period clothing marched up the Main Street to the beat of the music. The community atmosphere was fantastic and the children, staff and parents had a wonderful time.
Mr Traynor said, “It was wonderful to see such a great turnout for our parade today, the children and staff had certainly entered into the spirit of the day and the event was indeed a fitting tribute to mark the hundredth anniversary of outstanding education provided by St. Joseph’s Primary school and Nursery Unit past and present.”
