Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Over the past few weeks Mrs Downey’s P5 class have been working hard on a science project to investigate 'Why does the hair on our head grow longer than the hair on our body?'. Today they had the opportunity to showcase their Science Blast project at the ICC Belfast.
In total there were about 25 schools in attendance, all from across the country and all with different investigations for us to find out about. The boys and girls loved showing and telling everybody about ours! They even got interviewed by the BBC and were on Newsline that night! It was a fabulous experience and they had a great science day in Belfast!
We will watch this space for the scientists of the future - well done everyone!
Many thanks to Liz Brown, an LMC (Livestock and Meat Commission) demonstrator, who came to school today to demonstrate a recipe using Northern Ireland Farm Quality Assured Beef with our Year 6KL. Liz encouraged the children to sample what she had cooked, talked to them about the ingredients used with the emphasis on choosing local food, cooking from scratch, and of course how the ingredients used contribute to a healthy diet. All pupils were also given a Beef and Lamb Recipe Book which contains lots of delicious dishes. The children had a great time - many thanks again Liz!
This week we marked the end of another month in school with Golden Assemblies. This month it was the turn of Mr McGrattan's Year 2 class to lead our Year 1-3 Assembly.
Mr McGrattan's class chose the theme of Riughts Respecting Schools for their assembly. The assemblies enabled us all to focus on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the various articles within in. We got to hear how we all have the right to a name and nationality, education, medical care, a safe home, food and clothing and rest and play among many other things. All of the children were wonderful representatives for their class and school.
We also had time to sing Happy Birthday to all of our April boys and girls as well as present our monthly awards, celebrate success ouitside of school and deliver some important messages. Well done everyone - a great start to Term 3!
P3 visited the Crumlin Men’s Shed. During our visit we found out lots of information about the old school. We saw the assembly hall, principal’s office and the one classroom. We even saw where the fire was to keep the children warm during their school day!
This was a lovely learning experience which linked with the topic we have just completed ‘School’s Cool.’ We also found out all about growing vegetables, fruits, flowers and trees. We went inside the poly tunnels and observed how the plants were watered etc. We also found out how the Men’s Shed is helping our local community, this was a great opportunity as our current topic is ‘Out and About.’ We really enjoyed the visit!
Congratulations to the Boys' Gaelic Football Team who travelled to Creggan to take part in the SW Antrim 7-a-side Football Tournament.
There was great team work and skill displayed and the boys did St Joseph's proud and won the Football Shield.
Thank you to Mr McMullan and Mr McCullagh for the work which they do in promoting and developing Gaelic sport in St Joseph's. Also thank you to Creggan for hosting such a great tournament.
Well done boys - Congratulations!
Our Year 6AW pupils met up today with the children from their Shared Education Partnership at Crumlin Integrated Primary School. They enjoyed the time spent together practising their ball skills and playing a few friendly games. The sunshine was an added bonus and they look forward to their next meeting.
A Book is a Dream You Hold in Your Hand!
Thank you to all who supported our recent Scholastic Book Fair in school. We now have £2,350 to spend on books for our children. How amazing is that? We will spend the money supplementing our school reading scheme, adding to our bank of books for the Accelerated Reading Programme and on the purchase of books for the lending library in our Nursery Unit. Well done and many again many thanks!
Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader. Read to Succeed!
We are delighted to announce that we have secured the grand total of £9,500 from ‘Living Places and Spaces Fund’ delivered by The National Lottery Community Fund. This money will be used to develop more of the outdoor learning environment in our school.
Mr McKenna and Mrs Downey will be working together with some of the children in the school to see how we can create additional exciting outdoor space for our learning. After the successful development of our Science Courtyard, Sensory Garden and Forest School area, we are very excited about the opportunity to develop other areas in our school for use by everyone.
There will be areas of planting, investigative work, Forest School activities as well as encouraging more wildlife to our school. We will also be able to use these areas for the Eco team and with our Shared Education partners.
We look forward to working with our local community to help create this space for us all to enjoy!
Our Year 7 pupils begin their last term in St Joseph's today. To mark this occassion they were presented with their Leavers' Hoodies which they can wear to school throughout Term 3. Don't they all look so well? Enjoy your final term girls and boys - there's lots to look forward to!
