Congratulations to our Year 7 pupils who celebrated their Service of Commitment during our school mass today - an excellent beginning to their Confirmation preparations. Confirmation will be celebrated on Thursday 9th March in Mater Dei Church.
Today we launced our Paired Reading Programme. Our Year 3 pupils have been paired with a Year 7 pupil for the duration of the programme and will engage in three half-hour paired reading sessions per week Year 3 children, with the support of their Year 7 partner, select their paired Reading books from a stock of books especially selected for the programme.
Paired Reading which has two distinct parts - Reading Togther and Reading Alone - has been shown to have excellent results for helping children to read, enjoy reading and to develop a positive attitude to reading.
We look forward to all children involved with the programme having an enjoyable and rewarding literacy experience.
There have been lots of amazing individual and class achievements with our Accelerated Reading Programme during Term 1. The word count continues to rise along with the number of Word Millionaires.
Today it was the turn of Mrs Lawlor's Year 6 class to celebrate as deserving class winners from Term1. There were rewarded with an icecream party and video for their efforts.
Keep up the excellent reading ...... who will be our class winners in Term 2?

Children from the Nursery Unit are taking part in a 6 week programme delivered by Antrim Playball. The children loved their first session today - just look at them walk, run, crawl, jump, and climb to name but a few. And by the big smiles on their faces they had lots of fun too!
Children in the Nursery and Year 1 attended a nurture session with Fiona-Marie Devlin from the EA.
This was a great first session in which the children developed their turn-taking skills, their listening skills and their use of their gentle hands. Fiona-Marie taught the children 3 important rules: firstly to stick together, secondly to use kind hands and thirdly to have fun!
Thank you very much Fiona-Marie and we look forward to our next session.
Today, 6th January, we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany by watching mass online streamed live from St Joseph's Church Glenavy.
The Epiphany is a special date when we celebrate how a star led the Magi - also known as the Three kings or the Wise Men - to visit the baby Jesus after he had been born. Today our Faith Group added the Three Wise Men to our school crib to mark this special occassion.
A prayer for this Special Day:
Father of light,
Today you reveal to people of faith your Word made flesh.
Your light is strong, your love is sure.
Draw us beyond the limits of this world into your eternal life.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

We would like to wish our school community a happy, peaceful and safe Christmas break and every blessing for good health and happiness in 2023!
From all at St Joseph's!
What a wonderful treat to finish Term 1 in school ..... a music demonstration from the EA (NE Region) Staff Orchestra.
The perfomance began with a Christmas Story set to music and was followed by a programme which outlined the instruments of the orchestra in a fun but informative style. There were many opportunities to listen to some beautiful Christmas carols and music being played. Indeed there were also opportunities for some audience participation playing a variety of percussion instruments. The orchestra even had their own conductor, specially chosen from our Year 2 pupils.
Many thanks to Mr Lowry and his team for coming along and sharing this magical Christmas performance with our pupils and staff.
Merry Christmas!
